We explain the benefits of exercise and diet in living longer and staying mentally and physically fit, citing expert medical opinion. To achieve a healthy mind (mens sana) you must constantly strive to contain it within a healthy body (in corpore sano).

FOOD FOR THOUGHT – AND EXERCISE, TOO

What you should eat, as life goes on, to maintain a peak of mental and physical stamina and energy is a vital topic. We decided to ask Dr Andrew Strigner, the Harley Street consultant physician with a special interest in nutrition and in improvement in one’s use of the mind, for his direct personal advice. This is what he told us, exclusively for this book.

‘I have always had an interest in nutrition. Sadly, when I began my medical education, I discovered that it was not part of the medical curriculum, the result being that I qualified feeling that I knew little more than my patients. Knowing one’s own limitations, however, can stiffen one’s resolve. So, continuing the search, I was fortunate to discover the McCarrison Society. Founded originally by a number of doctors, scientists and veterinary surgeons, it was devoted to the study of the relationship between nutrition and health and to the promulgation of this knowledge.

‘Subsequently I discovered other researchers worldwide. What I found staggering is the amount of actual knowledge that exists, but which tends to remain with the researchers (some of whom appear not to know of the existence of others in the field) and is only slowly released. Curiously, much of this appears in the popular Press, perhaps in magazine articles, and is read by an increasingly interested lay public. They, in turn, are putting pressure on the medical profession, thereby causing the doctors to seek the answers.

‘Happily, some of our newer medical schools, Oxford and Southampton among others, include nutrition on their curricula.

‘The study of nutrition is the more fascinating because of the contributions made by people in other disciplines: epidemiologists, anthropologists, palaeoanthropologists, anatomists, physiologists, biochemists and, of course, clinicians.’

Nutrition is especially important for those who plan to have children at a later age.
